From Dapeng Elementary School to Zhongqing Road, stalls fill the streets from early morning – this is Shuinan Market, ranked third in scale among Taichung's private markets. Walk a few blocks northwest and the scenery suddenly shifts to new buildings and still-vacant land – that's the Economic and Trade Park developed on the site of the old Shuinan Airport.
The Green Line's Wenxin Zhongqing Station sits right on the neighbourhood's southeast corner, while Wenhua Senior High School Station is just a few steps outside the southern boundary. Among Taichung's 32 neighbourhoods, this one ranks 11th for public transit and 17th for daily convenience – both mid-range. Get your grocery shopping done early: Shuinan Market runs from around 5am to noon. China Medical University's Shuinan Campus and the Pop Music Center are both within the neighbourhood, and the visitor centre for Central Park is on this side too – from there you can walk straight into the 67-hectare park. About 300 metres north of the park, just outside the neighbourhood, the Taichung Green Museumbrary opens in late 2025.
Both the sidewalks-and-streetscape category and daily shopping rank near the bottom of Taichung's 32 neighbourhoods – 27th and 26th respectively. The northern half is a land-readjustment zone, so there's still plenty of vacant land between the new buildings. The market gets crowded during business hours, so if you live near Zhongqing Road or Dapeng Road, leave extra time when heading out in the morning.
The old settlement to the south is called Xiashibei; it was Xiashibei Village in the late Qing era, and became a 'da-zi' (administrative hamlet) in 1920. Local lore has it that when Han settlers moved into Xitun in the early days, the authorities put up stone markers here to mark the boundary – Xiashibei roughly spanned from today's Gansu Road Section 2 to Shuinan Market, and the market area was also known as Xinjie. Shuinan Airport to the north takes its name from Shuinan, about 1 kilometre to the east; it served as an army airfield during the Japanese colonial era. Civil aviation moved to Qingquangang in March 2004, and by the end of 2007 most of the land was handed over to the city government to be developed as the Economic and Trade Park. In 2020, China Medical University's Shuinan Campus opened, and Central Park was fully opened to the public.
China Medical University is building an art museum on its Shuinan Campus within the neighbourhood, designed by architect Frank Gehry – groundbreaking took place on 3 May 2025. According to the city government's announced timeline, it's expected to be completed and open by 2028.
