Local guide

01First impressions

Zhongming Elementary School's address is on Taiwan Boulevard, and just north of the school you'll find residential lanes, Zhongcheng Park and the village activity center. The park, at the corner of Zhongming Road and Huamei West Street, is shaded by trees and is where residents take walks and kids play; there's also a Fude Temple inside. Zhongming Elementary School's catchment area also takes in Heming Village in neighboring Xitun District, and together the two villages make up this neighborhood, home to about 10,000 people. On the Heming Village side is Hankou Junior High School, founded in 1992, so both an elementary and a junior high school are within the neighborhood.

02What works

Sidewalks rank 8th among Taichung's 47 neighborhoods, and the neighborhood environment ranks 20th. Zhongcheng Park also has an i-Bike rental station. For transit, the Taiwan Boulevard bus lane has a Zhongming Elementary School stop right at the school gate, and the nearest MRT station, Wenxin Yinghua, is about 620 meters from the edge of the neighborhood. South of Taiwan Boulevard is the Jingming Shopping District, and the stretch near Jingming 1st Street falls inside the neighborhood.

03Heads-up

Everyday shopping ranks 35th among Taichung's 47 neighborhoods, in the lower tier, and everyday convenience ranks 27th. The "Zhongming" in this neighborhood's name refers to Zhongming Elementary School; the other neighborhood to the east across Mayuantou Creek, "North of the Science Museum & Zhongming Rd," refers to Zhongming Road in North District.

04A bit of history

Mayuantou was originally written with a different character for "ma" and was a zhuang (village) in the late Qing dynasty; one story says it got its name from farmers who made a living growing hemp on the poor soil. In 1941, Mayuantou was merged into Taichung City. After the war, Mayuantou Zhuang was split into Zhongming Village and Gongzheng Village; Zhongcheng Village was originally part of Zhongming Village and was only separated out later. Of Heming Village's 19.2 hectares, 16.5 lie within the official 5th (Dadun) Redevelopment Zone, while 5.5 hectares of Zhongcheng Village lie within the 3rd (Zhongming) Redevelopment Zone. In 1997, residents raised the funds and built the Zhongcheng Fude Temple themselves. In early 2018, the Zhongming Elementary School stop on Taiwan Boulevard teamed up with local comic artist Hom to become Taichung's first painted bus stop, decorated with the National Taichung Theater, sun cakes and bubble tea.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Taichung neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
