When you hear Songzhu, most people think of Songzhu Station first, but the station is actually on the other side of Beitun Road in Jiushe Village, not in this neighbourhood. This area is a residential district east of Changping Road and west of Beitun Road, centred on Songzhu Elementary School on Changping Road Section 2. Songzhu Temple on Songzhu Road Section 2 is a village temple left over from the Sanfenpu era.
Seeing a doctor is easy here - this neighbourhood ranks 8th out of Taichung's 32 neighbourhoods for medical access and 9th for everyday convenience. For groceries, you've got two options: Yidianli Evening Market in Pingxing Village, or Jingu Market tucked in the lanes off Changping Road Section 2 in Songhe Village. For the MRT or TRA, just walk about 300 metres outside the neighbourhood to reach Songzhu Station. Songqiang Elementary School opened in 2025, giving the neighbourhood a second elementary school.
Sidewalks rank 26th and greenery 23rd, so the walking environment here is just so-so. The school catchment for Pingxing, Songmao, and Songyong is Qiaoxiao Elementary School, but the school itself is outside the neighbourhood in Jiushe Village.
This area's old name was Sanfenpu. During the Qing dynasty, the Lai family divided the unclaimed wasteland into two villages at a ratio of three to two - the side that got three parts was called Sanfenpu, and the other side was called Erfenpu. Over time this old place name faded from use, and people switched to naming things after Songzhu Temple, the village temple, which is how Songzhu Village and Songzhu Road got their names. Songzhu Temple was built in 1833 and enshrines the Water-Flowing Guanyin. In 1990 the temple erected a 20-metre-tall statue of the White-Robed Guanyin in its back courtyard; it was blown down by Typhoon Haitang in 2005 and re-installed in 2010. In 1913, Sanfenpu Public School - the predecessor of Beitun Elementary School - was located right where Songzhu Elementary School stands today.
