Residential streets between Veterans General Hospital and Guo'an Elementary, small parks tucked along the lanes
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Daily life in this neighborhood revolves around Taichung Veterans General Hospital. The medical center opened in 1982 and now has 1,939 beds; the main campus along Taiwan Boulevard and the north campus on Dongda Road are both within this neighborhood. Behind the hospital are residential streets often called the "Veterans General area," which runs into the Central Taiwan Science Park area to the east. About 1 km north of the hospital is Guo'an Elementary School, right next to Guo'an Public Housing. Between the elementary school and the hospital, several community parks—Guo'an No. 1, Guo'an No. 2, and Hong'en—are scattered through the lanes.
In street photos, this neighborhood ranks 10th out of Taichung's 47 neighborhoods for trash and cleanliness, and 11th for greenery—the lanes are clean, and you'll find a community park just a few steps away. For groceries, there's an evening market on the east side of the neighborhood, so you don't need to leave it. It's also convenient for kids' schooling, since the core of Guo'an Elementary School's catchment area is right in this neighborhood.
There's no MRT station within this neighborhood; the nearest one, Wenxin Yinghua Station, is about 4 km from the neighborhood's edge, and this neighborhood ranks 36th for public transit. It ranks 37th for everyday convenience. The area around Veterans General has had chronic traffic congestion for years, with both hospital visitors and commuters crowding the streets near the hospital. To the west, across Dongda Road, is Tunghai University, which falls outside this neighborhood.
The old place name for this area was Shuikutou, covering what are now Yong'an, Furui, Fulian, and other villages. In 1982, Veterans General was established as the Taichung branch of the Veterans General Hospital, and it wasn't until 1988 that it was reorganized as an independent institution, Taichung Veterans General Hospital. Guo'an Elementary School was established in October 1995. In April 2021, construction began on Guo'an Phase 1 social housing in the Guo'an land section: 4 buildings and 500 units, with the ground floor planned for a childcare center, a social services station, and shops. Residents have since moved in.
The latest change is right next to Veterans General: work to close a roughly 215-meter gap in Fushun Road between Furui Street and Dongda Road began in July 2026, with completion expected in April 2027. The new link adds another route and spreads out traffic around the hospital. Further out, there's the MRT Blue Line, which is planned to run along Taiwan Boulevard—Taiwan Boulevard Section 4 is the southern border of this neighborhood. The Blue Line was approved by the Executive Yuan in January 2024, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held in June 2025. The city government's report originally stated a completion date of 2034, but in July 2026 the MRT Engineering Bureau told the city council that the overall timeline would be pushed back by 2 to 2.5 years.
