01First impressions

"Eat in Beiping, wear in Tianjin" is an old saying Taichung locals use to describe this area. Beiping Road is one long restaurant street, mostly Japanese and waisheng (mainland Chinese) cuisine; Tianjin Road is a garment shopping district, with goods sourced from Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Korea, Europe and the US. Beyond these two commercial streets are residential lanes, and the nine villages in this neighborhood have a registered population of about 44,000. Kids mostly walk to Liren Elementary School or Laicuo Elementary School, since most of the nine villages fall within these two schools' catchments.

02What works

For daily shopping, this neighborhood ranks 2nd out of Taichung's 47 neighborhoods, and 1st for medical care—you don't have to go far for groceries or doctor visits. Tianjin Road bills itself as central Taiwan's largest wholesale clothing market; during the Tianjin Clothing Airing Festival, Section 2 is closed to traffic from Meichuan West Road to Shanxi Road. For the MRT, Wenxin Zhongqing Station sits right on the neighborhood's western border at the Wenxin Road intersection, with the secondary station name "Tianjin Business District". The Meichuan River flows through the neighborhood along Meichuan East Road and Meichuan West Road, and Meichuan Park sits by the river in Laixing Village.

03Heads-up

In street photos, this neighborhood ranks 40th out of Taichung's 47 neighborhoods for cleanliness and 37th for buildings. It's also densely populated—the North District where this neighborhood sits has about 21,000 people per square kilometer. Aside from Wenxin Zhongqing Station on the western border, all other MRT stations are outside the neighborhood; Wenxin Chongde Station is about 400 meters from the edge.

04A bit of history

The area where Laicuo Elementary School now stands was once called Laicuobu: the Lai clan grew sugarcane here and set up a small sugar mill; in the Japanese era it was called Niitakacho. Before land readjustment, this was a suburban area with large, irregularly shaped plots. From February 1979 to August 1980, the city government carried out the 4th-phase Zhongzheng-Dongshan land readjustment project, covering about 440 hectares. Most of Changqing, Liren, Laiwang, Laixing and other villages in this neighborhood fall within it. Laicuo Elementary School didn't begin enrolling students until August 1999, and its name comes from the old place name Laicuobu. In April 2021, Wenxin Zhongqing Station officially began operations.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Taichung neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
