Coming out of the only exit at Fengle Park MRT Station, you find yourself standing right in Nanyuan Park. Walk about 400 metres along Section 1 of Wenxin South 5th Road and you'll reach Fengle Sculpture Park: 6 hectares of grass and an artificial lake dotted with 52 sculptures. All around are the high-rise communities of Ba Qi, with wide, straight roads where turning a corner often reveals yet another park. At the northern edge of the neighbourhood, on Dadun South Road, stands the Taichung Mosque, completed in 1990, and the nearby bus stop is named after it.
For street-level environment, greenery and pavements, this neighbourhood ranks No. 2 out of Taichung's 32 neighbourhoods. Besides Fengle Sculpture Park and Nanyuan Park, there are plenty of smaller neighbourhood parks, so there's no shortage of places to take the kids or walk the dog. Fengle Park MRT Station sits right inside the neighbourhood, and public transport ranks No. 5. For movies and shopping there's Xiutai Life, for big grocery runs there's Costco, and both Yongchun Elementary School and Wanhe Junior High School are within the neighbourhood.
Daily shopping ranks 18th and healthcare 16th, both mid-table for Taichung and not as strong as the environmental scores. Right next to Fengle Park Station are a large park and hypermarkets, so foot traffic is noticeably heavier on weekends than on weekdays. The southern edge of the neighbourhood is the still-developing Daqing Land Readjustment Zone No. 13, with quite a few vacant lots and construction sites; if you live near the southern boundary, the surrounding scenery will keep changing as development continues.
The official name of Ba Qi is the Fengle Zone 8 Land Readjustment Area, completed between 1988 and 1991; before that it was an agricultural area with messy, scattered land parcels. The traditional place name for the Fengle Village area was Macipu, originally written with a different character for 'ma', and in 1920 it became a sub-district called Macipu under Nantun Village. Fengle Sculpture Park opened in 1994 and was Taiwan's first public outdoor sculpture park. The MRT station opened on 25 April 2021; during the planning stage it was going to be called Macipu Station.
