Once the Taiwan Match factory site, now a residential quarter beside Taichung Industrial High
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Meicun South Road used to be called Yonghe Street, and the Taiwan Match factory stood on it; nearly every older resident of Yongxing Village worked at "Taihuo" at some point. The factory was torn down in 1993 and replaced with housing, and torch emblems can still be seen around the community. On the fourth floor of the South District Office is the Taiwan Match Story House, open on weekdays, with matchboxes from every era. About 44,000 people lived in this middle part of South District at the end of 2020; Taichung Industrial High is in the southwest corner of the neighborhood, and National Chung Hsing University is a short way beyond its eastern edge.
Two elementary schools each serve their own part: Xinyi Elementary School on Wuquan South Road and Heping Elementary School on Section 2, Fuxing Road. Everyday shopping ranks 20th of Taichung's 47 neighborhoods, only middling; healthcare ranks 8th, well ahead of shopping. For the train, TRA Wuquan Station is at the north end of the neighborhood.
This is a large neighborhood, seven villages over about 210 hectares, and the streets are not all of one kind. The Gongxue-Taihuo Shopping District, registered in 2026, lies only partly inside the neighborhood; the rest is in Yonghe and Gongxue villages, outside it. About half of Fuping Village's neighborhood units are in the catchment of Dayong Elementary School, which is outside the neighborhood. Nanhe and Yongxing villages have kept growing: from 2012 to 2020, Nanhe Village went from 7,384 to 8,678 people and Yongxing Village from 8,104 to 9,565. Public transport ranks 17th: besides Wuquan Station at the north end, Daqing Station is about 915 meters outside the neighborhood.
In the late Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty, a settlement called Xiaqiaozaitou formed on the north bank of the Hanxi River, covering today's Fuxing, Heping, Yongxing and Fuping villages. Heping Elementary School began in 1920 as a branch school of a public school. In 1938 Taichung Industrial School (today's Taichung Industrial High) was founded, and the same year the Taiwan Match Company opened its factory in Xiaqiaozaitou. From the 1990s, lighters replaced matches, and the factory was torn down in 1993. In 2026 the Gongxue-Taihuo Shopping District was registered, its name keeping the Taihuo history.
For the Nanping multi-story parking garage at the corner of Nanping Road and Section 2, Meicun Road, draft tender documents were released in April 2025; a city briefing in June 2026 still listed it as in preparation; it is planned to provide 300 car spaces, with an investment of NT$1 billion.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
