01First impressions

Willows line both banks of the Liuchuan River, light and dark greens running along the embankments, and the river is the eastern edge of Gongmin Village. Gongmin Village was originally home mostly to civil servants and teachers, but shops have gradually multiplied, most residents now work in commerce or services, and newcomers keep moving in. To the north is National Taichung University of Education; its front building is the old normal school building completed in 1928. Residents of neighboring Pinghe Village usually go onto the campus to exercise.

02What works

Sidewalks rank 7th of Taichung's 47 neighborhoods, this neighborhood's best ranking. Zhongxin Elementary School sits beside the cultural and education district of the art museum and the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and its teaching makes use of the Liuchuan River and the Meichuan River, the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the museum. Lanxing Village has three parks, Lequn, Lanxing and Gongguan, where residents relax mornings, evenings and on days off. Seeing a doctor is easy too: healthcare ranks 11th.

03Heads-up

This neighborhood is only four villages, about 81.6 hectares, squeezed between the Art Museum Parkway and Taichung Station neighborhoods. There is no station inside it: TRA Wuquan Station is about 215 meters outside, and Taichung Station about 1.3 kilometers. Greenery ranks 35th of Taichung's 47 neighborhoods, in the lower half.

04A bit of history

The Liuchuan River was originally called Qiucuo Creek, or Qiudalao Canal, and Taichung's earliest streets grew up along it; it was renamed Liuchuan under the Japanese-era urban plan of 1916. Taichung Normal School was re-established in 1923, and its front building was completed in 1928; it was registered as a historic building in 2004. In 1946 the Eastern gouache painter Lin Chih-chu began teaching at the normal school and moved into its dormitory on Liuchuan West Road, where he painted until he moved out in 2006; the dormitory is now a registered memorial building. Zhongxin Elementary School was founded as a branch school in 1956 and became an independent school the following year. In 1969 Lanxing Village was split off from Gongguan Village.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Taichung neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
