Paozi sits in the south-east corner of Beitun District, with Dakeng Creek to the north; cross the district line to the south and you're in Taiping. The western half is a new community built after land readjustment, while the eastern half starts climbing uphill towards Shanjiao. The campus of Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology is also in this neighbourhood. Lots of people have moved in over the last few years — by the end of 2025, Paozi Village had 29,532 residents, making it the most populous village (li) in Taichung.
Street-view photos look really tidy — it ranks 2nd for both cleanliness and building condition, and 5th for greenery. Both Paozi Park and Bo'ai Park are in the neighbourhood, along with the Municipal Tennis Center. The Taichung Municipal Geriatric Rehabilitation Hospital on Taiyuan Road Section 3 began trial operations in September 2025 and officially opened in December — it's Taichung's first municipal hospital. The newly established Paozi Junior High School is also in the neighbourhood, and will start enrolling students in September 2026.
Everyday convenience is still catching up. It ranks 30th for convenience of daily life and 29th for public transport — there's no MRT station or train station in the neighbourhood. Pavements rank 29th. Healthcare ranks 28th — this category only counts nearby clinics and pharmacies, not hospitals, so the municipal hospital doesn't show up in the ranking. For everyday prescriptions or minor ailments, it's still worth finding a clinic nearby first. Part of the geologically sensitive zone along the Chelungpu Fault falls within Beitun District, so when you're house-hunting it's worth checking whether a particular plot is inside that neighbourhood. Also, although Paozi Elementary School has "Paozi" in its name, the school building is actually in neighbouring Shuijing Village to the west, which belongs to the Beitun District 10 neighbourhood.
In the early days, sugarcane was grown here for sugar production, and a sugar mill (tangpao) was set up; cane from around Dakeng was brought here to be pressed. Later, people dropped the word for sugar and just called the place "Paozai". In 1920, when local administrative divisions were reformed, "Paozai Village" was rewritten as "Paozi," becoming one of the main hamlets (da-zi) under Beitun Village. In 1995, a detailed area plan for Paozi was published, and it was decided to develop the whole area through land readjustment; the road works were gradually completed and opened to traffic between 2010 and 2012.
