A big park built on an old pond, with people dancing and exercising by the gateway in the morning
Nangang Park was originally an irrigation pond called Houshanpi, and part of the old pond still remains in the park today, with duckweed and water lilies growing along the water's edge. A 13-metre-tall red memorial archway stands at the park's main entrance, and the plaza in front of it is where nearby residents dance and do morning exercises. To the west of Nangang Park is Yucheng Park, which has a swimming pool, tennis courts, and basketball courts. For greenery, this neighbourhood ranks 20th out of Taipei's 66 neighbourhoods, putting it near the front of the pack.
If you're into exercise, besides the two parks, there's also the Nangang Sports Center on Yucheng Street, which opened in 2006 and has a swimming pool, a diving pool, and a shooting range. For the MRT, there's Houshanpi Station beneath Zhongxiao East Road Sections 5 and 6, which features the public artwork "Urban Oasis" inside the station. Public transport ranks 30th, putting it right in the middle. For medical care, you can go to the Zhongxiao Branch of Taipei City Hospital on Tongde Road, which is a regional hospital with an emergency room. Even though there's a major hospital right in the neighbourhood, overall healthcare only ranks 43rd, which is a bit towards the lower end.
Everyday shopping ranks 52nd, putting it in the lower tier among the 66 neighbourhoods, so it's worth scoping out your regular supermarket in advance. The western boundary is Zhongpo North Road and Zhongpo South Road; across from there is Xinyi District, and the area around Yongchun Station belongs to a different neighbourhood. To the east, Chengde Elementary School and Kunyang Station are also outside the neighbourhood.
From the late Qing dynasty through the early Japanese colonial period, this area was Houshanpi Village; in 1920 the name's characters were changed to "Houshanpo". The village had an irrigation pond of the same name, one of Nangang's three major ponds, which covered a large area at the time. In 1987, the pond was converted into Nangang Park; in July of the same year, Taipei Municipal Zhongxiao Hospital was established on Tongde Road. At the end of 2000, Houshanpi Station opened along with the Bannan Line. In 2005, the city hospitals merged to form Taipei City Hospital, and Zhongxiao Hospital became today's Zhongxiao Branch; the following year, the Nangang Sports Center opened.
