The eateries by Nishi-Nippori Station's east exit, up to the quiet homes on the Dokanyama bluff beside Kaisei Academy
Nishi-Nippori Station is where two major roads intersect, with bus stops lined up along Dokanyama-dori and Ogubashi-dori. Less than a minute's walk from the east exit, there's a whole row of shops, with izakayas being the most common, plus ramen and fast food outlets. Heading west up Dokanyama-dori, the elevated area on the north side of Nishi-Nippori 4-chome is Dokanyama, where Kaisei Junior and Senior High School has its campus.
The JR Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, Chiyoda Line subway and Nippori-Toneri Liner all meet at this station, and public transport ranks 20th among Tokyo's 158 neighbourhoods. It's only 0.5 km to the neighbouring Nippori Station, the shortest distance between consecutive stations on the Yamanote Line. Everyday convenience ranks 25th, with daily shopping at 34th and clinics and pharmacies at 36th, so neither groceries nor a doctor is far away.
In our street photos the streetscape is this area's weak side: pavements rank 156th, third from the bottom among Tokyo's 158 neighbourhoods and the weakest category here; cleanliness ranks 155th and greenery is also 155th, with very little green to be seen. There aren't many supermarkets near the station; within a five-minute walk you'll only find two small ones, and you need seven to eight minutes to reach a larger one. The east exit area has several railway lines crossing through it, so if you're looking at houses near the tracks, it's best to visit in person and listen to the train noise. There will be several more years of redevelopment work at the station forecourt.
There are three theories about the name Dokanyama: one says it was the site of an outpost fort of Ota Dokan, another that it was the residence of Seki Dokan, a Kamakura-period local magnate, and a third suggests it's a mispronunciation of "Inari-yama". During the Edo period, this was a famous spot for gathering medicinal herbs and listening to insects sing; Utagawa Hiroshige painted "Picture of Listening to Insects at Dokanyama". Kaisei Gakuen originally stood in Kanda Awajicho, but after the Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed the school buildings, it relocated to Dokanyama in 1924. The Chiyoda Line's Nishi-Nippori Station opened in 1969, while the JR station opened in 1971, built to facilitate transfers with the Chiyoda Line; before opening it was called "Shin-Nippori".
According to Arakawa Ward's redevelopment plan for the Nishi-Nippori Station forecourt area, the project covers approximately 2.3 hectares in front of the station in Nishi-Nippori 5-chome. The urban planning decision was completed in 2021, and the redevelopment association was approved and established in January 2025. The ward's current schedule calls for demolition of old buildings in fiscal year 2028, construction to begin in fiscal year 2029, and completion in fiscal year 2033, with a note that the timeline may be adjusted afterwards.
