Hatanodai Station where the Tokyu Ikegami and Oimachi lines cross, with four shopping streets around Showa Medical University and quiet homes

Local guide

01First impressions

Hatanodai Station is where two Tokyu lines meet: the Oimachi Line platforms are up on a viaduct, the Ikegami Line platforms are at ground level, and the two lines cross at right angles. The Ikegami Line platforms were redone in a wooden style in 2019 and won a Good Design Award for fiscal 2021. Around the station are several small shopping streets, one each in Hataoka, 3-chome and 4-chome, and beyond them lie quiet residential streets.

02What works

Healthcare and pharmacies rank 9th of Tokyo's 155 neighbourhoods, the strongest score here, and Showa Medical University's hospital is inside the area. Oimachi Line express trains stop here, and you can change to the Ikegami Line without passing through the ticket gates. At the end of 2022, AEON Town Hatanodai opened in 2-chome near the station, a three-storey building with an organic supermarket, a drugstore and several clinics. In our street photos, buildings rank 34th.

03Heads-up

Public transport ranks 112th of 155. Greenery ranks 118th, and there are few trees in the residential lanes. Nakahara-kaido and Kan-nana (Ring Road 7) run to the west and Daini-Keihin to the east, so the busy roads all stay on the edges of the residential area.

04A bit of history

Legend has it that in 1030 Minamoto no Yorinobu, marching to put down the revolt of Taira no Tadatsune, camped here, prayed to Hachiman and raised the white banners of the Minamoto clan; both Hataoka Hachiman Shrine and the name Hatanodai ("banner hill") come from this. In the Edo period the shrine held an archery contest every February 15, after which amazake was handed out, and an amazake festival is still held today. The two railways each opened a station here in 1927, the Oimachi Line's Higashi-Senzoku and the Ikegami Line's Hataoka, and in 1951 they were combined as Hatanodai Station. Hatanodai became an official town name only in 1965, when addresses were reorganised.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighbourhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
