01First impressions

Nishi-magome Station is the starting point of the Toei Asakusa Line, with its platform underground; just south of the station is the Asakusa Line's rolling stock depot, the Magome Rolling Stock Depot. About a 5-minute walk from the station, there's a row of cherry trees lining the street between Minami-magome 4-chome and 6-chome, with a park at the 4-chome end. Every year in early April, the Magome Bunshi-mura Ozakura Matsuri cherry blossom festival is held here; it has run since 1991, with Awa Odori and parade dancing in the street.

This neighborhood covers Nishi-magome, Minami-magome 4- to 6-chome, Chuo 4- and 5-chome, Naka-ikegami, Kugahara 2-chome, Kamiikedai 5-chome, and Naka-magome 3-chome, 12 chome in all. As of 2020, about 53,000 people lived here, roughly 197 per hectare.

02What works

Judging from our street photos, daily shopping ranks 210th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, in the middle of the pack, and the strongest of this neighborhood's seven categories.

The stretch between Nishi-magome and Sengakuji is run as a branch line, and to head toward Shinagawa, Haneda Airport, or Yokohama you need to change at Sengakuji onto a train running through to the Keikyu line.

The Ota City Folk Museum in Minami-magome 5-chome offers free admission to its permanent exhibition. The Kumagai Tsuneko Memorial Hall in Minami-magome 4-chome was once the home of Kumagai Tsuneko, a female calligrapher of kana script.

03Heads-up

Public transit ranks 328th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, toward the bottom, and the weakest category for this neighborhood. The farthest point from a station in the neighborhood is about 1.5 km, on the side of Kugahara 2-chome and Chuo 4-chome.

The street-photo grid used for scoring has 124 cells, with most of the score coming from Minami-magome 4- to 6-chome and Nishi-magome 1-chome; Kamiikedai 5-chome has just 2 cells.

TidyMap ran its own estimate, taking points roughly every 40 meters within the neighborhood on the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan's flood inundation hazard map (maximum assumed scale). About 30% of the points fall within flood-prone areas, mostly 0.5 to 3 meters deep.

The highest proportions are in Naka-ikegami 1- and 2-chome, Chuo 4-chome, and Kugahara 2-chome, each around 60-80%; other chome are mostly under 30%. Check Ota City's hazard map for your specific address.

04A bit of history

Magome Hachiman Shrine, the tutelary shrine of the old Magome village, stands in Minami-magome 5-chome; it's said to have been established in 1193 through a divided spirit from Iwashimizu Hachimangu.

By the late Taisho and early Showa periods, writers and artists moved into Magome, forming what later became known as Magome Bunshi-mura, the writers' village. In November 1968, Toei Line 1 (now the Asakusa Line) opened, with Nishi-magome Station as its starting point.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
