A residential area by the cherry blossom path along the Shakujii River, with a fruit and vegetable wholesale market too
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
The Shakujii River flows past Nerima-Takanodai Station, with a brick-colored path along the riverbank that's a spot for viewing Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms. Chome 2 mixes residential buildings with logistics warehouses, and there's also a fruit and vegetable wholesale market. In front of the station, chome 1 has Emio Nerima-Takanodai, York Foods, Peacock, and Seiyu.
This area used to be paddy fields along the Shakujii River, known as Yahara Tanbo; after the farmland was consolidated from 1946 to 1950, it gradually turned into a wholesale district and residential area. The departure melody on the platform is also inspired by this river, depicting two ducks playing on the water.
This neighborhood is centered on chome 1 to 4 of Takanodai, plus chome 2 to 5 of Minamitanaka, and chome 3 and 4 of Fujimidai; in 2020, about 150 people lived per hectare.
Based on our street photos, building appearance ranks 81st out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and greenery ranks 122nd; both are in the top range.

This station is served only by Local trains; Express, Rapid, and other faster services all pass straight through on the outer through-tracks. Public transit ranks 301st out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, also in the lower range.
Sidewalks rank 362nd, the lowest-ranked item in this neighborhood; roads like Mejiro-dori and Sasame-dori both pass through Takanodai. Some listings in Minamitanaka chome 2 and 4 are also listed under Iogi Station in Suginami City, with 3 buildings in chome 4.
Takanodai originally belonged to the same town as Yahara to the north: in 1932 it was Shakujii-Yahara-cho in Itabashi City, and in 1949 it became Yahara-cho in Nerima City. When the residential address system was implemented in 1965, Yahara-cho chome 2 was divided along Mejiro-dori: the southern part merged with Minamitanaka-cho and part of Shimo-Shakujii to become Takanodai, while the northern part became Yahara.
The new town name was taken from Higashi-Koyasan, the mountain name by which Chomei-ji in chome 3 is popularly known. Read by its on'yomi, it should be pronounced Koyadai, but since Adachi City already had a Koya-cho, it was changed to the kun'yomi reading Takanodai.
The Ikebukuro Line was later elevated, and local residents and Nerima City made the addition of a new station a condition of this, so Nerima-Takanodai Station didn't open until 1994.
