Chihiro Art Museum, Tokyo is in Shimo-Shakujii 4-chome; it opened in 1977 as a picture book art museum, and took its current name after renovation in 2002. The foundation that runs it collects original picture book illustrations from around the world and displays them here. It's just a 7-minute walk from Kami-Igusa Station.
Shimo-Shakujii is bordered by the Shakujii River to the north, Senkawa-dori to the south, and Igusa-dori to the west, and there's no station inside this area. Senkawa-dori, the southern border, originally was where the Senkawa Josui waterway flowed.
When Nerima City planned its districts, it called 4-chome the "Kami-Igusa Station area," though that station is actually in neighboring Suginami City. This neighborhood covers Shimo-Shakujii 1-chome through 6-chome, with about 156 people per hectare in 2020.
From our street photos, building exteriors rank 68th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the highest-ranking item for this neighborhood.
Which station you walk to depends on the chome: 4-chome is just 2 to 7 minutes from Kami-Igusa Station, while 5-chome is 10 to 12 minutes. Rental listings in 1-chome are marked as Iogi Station in Suginami City, a 10 to 12-minute walk.
There are also plenty of buses: the route between Shakujii-koen Station and Ogikubo Station runs along Igusa-dori past Kami-Igusa Station on the west side, and along Waseda-dori past Iogi Station on the east side, wrapping around this area in between.
Public transit ranks 316th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and healthcare/pharmacies rank 336th, both in the lower range.
3-chome and 6-chome are farther from the station, with listings taking 15 to 16 minutes to walk to Kami-Igusa Station.
Shimo-Shakujii was originally Shimo-Shakujii Village; it was incorporated into Tokyo City in 1932, becoming Shimo-Shakujii 1-chome and 2-chome in Itabashi City; at that time the area also included what are now Shakujii-cho and Kami-Shakujii Minami-cho. In 1970, most of the old 2-chome was changed into Shakujii-cho.
In 1973, most of the old 1-chome plus part of Minami-Tanaka-cho were reorganized into today's Shimo-Shakujii 1-chome through 6-chome. The remaining part of the old 1-chome was changed into Kami-Shakujii Minami-cho in 1984.
The Seibu Shinjuku Line's approximately 5.1-kilometer stretch from Iogi to Seibu-Yagisawa is being elevated; project approval was obtained in March 2024, and railway construction is scheduled to run through March 2038. This section will eliminate 19 railroad crossings, and Kami-Igusa Station is included in the plan, which will convert it to an island platform once elevated.
