01First impressions

Daily life in Shanjia starts at an old station. Shanjia Station opened in 1903; its old station building is a New Taipei City designated monument, restored in 2017, and it stands alongside the new station building spanning the tracks that opened in 2011. The disused curve of track at the north end of the station is now the Railway Landscape Park, where the locomotives and coal hopper wagons on display are tied to the area's coal-mining history.

Real-estate listings say life here centres on the station, within a 5 to 10-minute walk, and the residents are mostly commuters, families who work in factories and people trading up to a new home. There is a shopping area in front of the station, and more shops on Jiayuan Road Section 1 and around Yude Elementary School.

For a walk, Shanzijiao Park is in Zhongshan Village. For school, Yude Elementary School is in Zhongshan Village and Shanjia Elementary School is in Shanjia Village.

02What works

Children in this neighborhood fall into two catchments. Yude Elementary School's catchment is the whole of Leshan Village plus neighborhood units (lin) 2 to 21, 24 and 25 of Zhongshan Village; Shanjia Elementary School's is lin 5 to 18 of Shanjia Village plus lin 2 to 20 of Dongshan Village, which lies outside this neighborhood.

In our street photos, litter and street cleanliness rank 27th of 100 neighborhoods in New Taipei, and greenery ranks 19th, both in the upper tier. Public transit ranks 57th, in the middle tier; Shanjia Station is served by local and fast local trains.

03Heads-up

Real-estate listings say Shanjia mixes homes and industry, with factories in the older parts that can bring noise or other environmental problems. Wikipedia also notes that besides the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Shulin Industrial Park, Shulin District has small industrial areas in places such as Shanjia, Ganyuan and Sanduo.

Everyday shopping ranks 85th, healthcare 90th and sidewalks 89th, all three in the lower tier. Residents quoted in real-estate listings also say that for eating out and shopping, nearby Shulin, Sanxia or even Yingge are more convenient. Leshan Village is hilly; Wikipedia says slopes above 25 metres in Shulin District are mainly in villages such as Dongshan and Leshan.

04A bit of history

Shanjia Station began as a coal freight station: when it opened in 1903 it was called Shanzijiao Station, carried mainly freight with passengers second, and the freight was mostly coal.

In 1960 and 1972 two more branch lines were built to carry sand and gravel from the banks of the Dahan River, and both closed in 1979. The station was renamed Shanjia in 1962; in 2009 its unusual S-shaped platform on the curve was removed and the tunnel straightened, and only then did the old track become today's railway park.

How are these measured?

Compared against the New Taipei neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
