Apartments above the old souks; step outside and take a boat across the creek

Bur Dubai sits on the western bank of Dubai Creek. Wikipedia says it's a popular residential area made up of several apartment buildings. Tucked among the apartment-lined streets are old markets: Meena Bazaar is a well-known shopping spot around here, and just one street over is the Textile Souk, built in the 1890s. To cross the creek to Deira on the other side, you take an abra, Dubai's oldest form of public transportation, paying the boatman 1 dirham.
Bayut says the homes are mostly mid- to high-rise apartments, ranging from studios to three- or four-bedroom units, and Wikipedia also notes that most of Dubai's Indian families live in Bur Dubai. Along the waterfront, Al Seef is a 1.8-kilometer walkway with shops, cafes, and a small dock where traditional wooden boats are moored.
Going by our scores, for everyday convenience measured by straight-line distance, this neighborhood ranks 2nd out of 20 neighborhoods in Dubai. Supermarkets listed by Bayut include Carrefour, Lulu, and Spinneys, and the main mall is BurJuman, in the neighboring Al Mankhool neighborhood.
Dubai Metro stations serving this area include Al Ghubaiba, Al Fahidi, and BurJuman, on both the Red Line and the Green Line.
Living here means getting used to crowds: Bayut lists traffic and parking as downsides, with some areas packed with tourists and commercial activity.
Older low-rise buildings may only have street parking available, with limited spots during peak hours. Going by our scores, this neighborhood ranks third from the bottom out of 20 neighborhoods in Dubai for greenery.
Al Bastakiya was built starting around the 1890s by Persian merchants, and its name comes from Bastak in southern Iran. In the 1980s, half of it was demolished to make way for office buildings, and in 1989 the municipality ordered the demolition of the rest.
Architect Rayner Otter campaigned to preserve it, the demolition was eventually called off, and in 2005 the municipality launched a restoration, renaming the district the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood. Now it houses exhibitions, cafes, and cultural institutions.
RTA's Al Shindagha Corridor improvement project spans 13 kilometers, aiming to cut travel time from 104 minutes to 16 minutes by 2030.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
