One of Deira's oldest quarters, where gold and spices are still haggled over by the creek
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Al Ras is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Deira, and its name means "headland". Bayut says Deira's housing is mostly apartments, ranging from studios to three-bedrooms. The Gold Souk is right in Al Ras, with more than 380 retailers, most of them jewelers, and the Spice Souk is right next door.
The Spice Souk sells spices, herbs, frankincense, and tea, and you'll usually need to haggle. It's close to the abra dock on Dubai Creek, and crossing over to Bur Dubai only costs 1 dirham.
Going by our scores, for everyday convenience measured by straight-line distance, it ranks 4th out of 20 neighborhoods in Dubai. Al Ras station is on the Dubai Metro Green Line, right near the Gold Souk and Spice Souk, with several bus connections as well.
Bayut says Deira's residents include families, professionals, and long-term expat residents.
Bayut says the traditional markets draw thousands of visitors every day, and weekday traffic gets congested. Naif is also very crowded—in 2022, the whole neighborhood packed 53,403 people into 0.561 square kilometers, with residents mostly South Asian.
Bayut says many residential buildings are aging, and older buildings often lack swimming pools and gyms, with many also missing dedicated parking for each unit. Going by our scores, cleanliness ranks last out of 20 neighborhoods in Dubai, building quality ranks last, and greenery ranks last.
In 1841, a smallpox outbreak hit Bur Dubai, and residents moved east across the water to Deira. Merchants began setting up stalls along Dubai Creek in the early 1900s, and free trade policies in the 1940s drew Indian and Iranian traders, which is how the Gold Souk grew to its current size.
After the UAE was founded in 1971, development focus shifted to Sheikh Zayed Road, and the old district lost its former importance. In 2008, a fire at Naif Souq burned down about 183 shops, and the rebuilt market ended up with almost double the old capacity.
Ithra Dubai announced an expansion around the Gold Souk in 2018. According to Wikipedia, the Dubai Gold District officially launched in January 2026, including six hotels, with Gold Street still under construction.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
