01First impressions

Parks big and small in Toyotama Minami are scattered through the quiet residential streets. There's a walking path from Gakuden Park to the Nakaniarai-gawa Children's Park, lined with cherry trees, which makes it a spot for flower viewing nearby in spring.

This neighborhood has no station of its own, so people around Toyotama Naka mostly walk to Nerima Station: on real estate listing pages, 17 out of 19 listings in Toyotama Naka 2 to 4-chome are marked as Nerima Station, a 7 to 14 minute walk.

Toyotama Minami is further from stations: listings are marked Nerima, Nogata, Shin-egota, and Numabukuro, all 13 to 17 minutes on foot. In 2020, this neighborhood had about 210 people per hectare.

02What works

Toyotama Kita 1 and 2-chome are right next to Shin-egota Station, with listings marked as 1 to 7 minutes on foot. This station is in Ehara-cho, Nakano City, and its northwest side extends into Toyotama Kita.

Another option is the bus: in November 2020, Kanto Bus opened the Naka03 route, running from Nakano Station through the Toyotama Minami residential area to Nerima Station.

From our street photos, cleanliness ranks 132nd out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, near the top. Sidewalks rank 123rd, also near the top.

03Heads-up

Healthcare ranks 273rd out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the weakest category for this neighborhood.

There's no station in the neighborhood, and public transit ranks 221st, only in the middle of the pack. From Toyotama Naka and Toyotama Minami, it's mostly a 7 to 17 minute walk to the nearest station.

04A bit of history

The place name Toyotama comes from Toyotama Elementary School: the school opened in 1876, and since 1884 has been at what is now Toyotama Naka 4-chome. The school's name itself was taken from Kitatoshima District and Higashitama District, the districts the school zone belonged to when it opened.

The place name changed because the old name "Nakaniarai" was easily confused with Arai Yakushi in Nakano City. Later, before Shin-egota Station opened, its provisional name was also "Toyotama," and it wasn't officially named Shin-egota until it opened in December 1997.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
