01First impressions

Walking north from Kinuta to Soshigaya-Okura Station, you'll find shops lining the main road and around the station. Tsuburaya Productions used to have its headquarters in this area, so both the north and south sides of the station use Ultraman to brand the neighborhood — even the shopping street is called Ultraman Shopping Street. The western edge is home to the Toho Studios, whose address is registered in Seijo 1-chome; Kurosawa Akira's Seven Samurai was filmed in Kinuta in 1954.

Tucked among the residential streets are a few large facilities related to television: the NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories, and Tokyo Media City, a TV studio in Kinuta 5-chome.

This neighborhood doesn't have its own station; about 70% of real estate listings in Kinuta 1- to 5-chome and 7-chome are listed under Soshigaya-Okura Station, a 4- to 18-minute walk. In 2020, about 29,000 people lived in this neighborhood, roughly 135 people per hectare.

02What works

Based on our street photos, buildings rank 310th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the highest ranking of any category for this neighborhood.

For everyday travel, most people head north to Soshigaya-Okura Station; from there, Tokyu Bus also runs to Shibuya Station and Yoga Station. Just outside the neighborhood, Kinuta Park opened in 1957, covering about 39 hectares, and is home to the Setagaya Art Museum.

03Heads-up

Public transit ranks 377th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and convenience of daily life ranks 375th, both toward the lower end.

Distance to the station varies by chome: properties in Kinuta 1-chome are 15 to 18 minutes from Soshigaya-Okura Station. In Kinuta 2-chome, about half the listings are under Soshigaya-Okura Station and half under Chitose-Funabashi Station, both around 10 minutes; in Kinuta 7-chome, most are listed under Seijo-Gakuen-mae Station, 9 to 12 minutes.

04A bit of history

Soshigaya-Okura Station opened in 1927, and the NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories was established in Kinuta in 1930. On October 1, 1936, Kinuta Village was merged into Setagaya City.

In 1954, Seven Samurai was filmed here. The residential address system was implemented on May 1, 1971, creating the current Kinuta 1- through 8-chome. In 1992, Tokyo Media City was built on the former site of the Kokusai Hoei Studios.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
