01First impressions

The streets of Kami-Yoga are laid out in a grid, carved out by the 1934 land readjustment. The northeast corner of that grid is Baji Koen, the equestrian park, where the equestrian events of both the 1964 and 2020 Tokyo Olympics were held. Just inside the main gate is a lawn plaza that's normally a spot where locals rest; next to it is a children's plaza, plus the Musashino natural forest walking trail that still has original woodland.

Baji Koen covers about 18.5 hectares, about 15% of all of Kami-Yoga. Aside from Baji Koen and public facilities, most of the land is zoned exclusively for low-rise or mid-to-high-rise residential use.

In 2020 this neighborhood had a population of about 15,000, or about 122 people per hectare. There's no station within the neighborhood - normally you'd walk to Yoga Station or take a bus.

02What works

Judging from our street photos, cleanliness ranks 45th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and greenery ranks 44th - both near the top. In the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's 2022 earthquake risk ranking, Kami-Yoga 1-chome through 6-chome all scored the lowest risk level, Level 1 out of five.

Of the 20 listings on real estate sites, 16 are marked as being near Yoga Station, with walking times ranging from 5 to 23 minutes. The north side of 4-chome and 6-chome have 3 listings marked as near Chitose-Funabashi Station, 17 to 19 minutes away.

Buses run along Yoga Nakamachi-dori to Yoga Station; the Shibu 22 route continues via Sangenjaya to Shibuya Station. There are also buses to Shibuya along Setagaya-dori.

03Heads-up

This neighborhood is far from the station: listings marked as near Yoga Station are mostly 13 to 20 minutes away on foot, with the farthest at 23 minutes. Public transit ranks 358th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and convenience of daily life ranks 359th - both near the bottom.

Some low-lying spots in town have poor drainage and have flooded during heavy rain. Since 1989, the City office has recorded 35 flooding incidents in Kami-Yoga, more than half between 1989 and 1999, with the most recent in 2018.

04A bit of history

In 1929, the Army's medical supply depot moved from Shirokanedai to what is now Kami-Yoga 1-chome. The 1934 land readjustment carved out today's grid, funded by selling part of the land to the Imperial Horse Racing Association; in 1940, Baji Koen opened on that site.

Baji Koen finished renovation and reopened on November 3, 2023. When the residential address system was implemented, Kami-Yoga 1-chome through 6-chome were split off from the old Tamagawa-Yoga town; in 2016, Kami-Yoga Park opened on the former site of the House of Representatives' stenographer training institute.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
