01First impressions

Around Higashi-Nagasaki Station there's the Nagasaki Ginza shopping street, and Tokyu Store, Seiyu, and Summit Store all have Higashi-Nagasaki locations. In the Showa 30s, many wooden apartment buildings were built in this area for young people from outside Tokyo.

Crossing into Nishi-Ochiai 4-chome in Shinjuku City, apart from along the main roads, the whole area is a low-rise residential-only zone with a grid-pattern street layout; in 2014 it was set up as a 30 km/h speed-limit zone. The northern part of Nishi-Ochiai is close to Higashi-Nagasaki Station, so residents there also often use this station.

Nagasaki 4-chome wants to be a neighborhood that balances liveliness and quiet, a good place to live, while also protecting its calm residential environment. Among people living in this neighborhood, owner-occupied homes account for about 36%, higher than the 32% for Toshima City as a whole; the proportion of children under 15 is also slightly higher.

02What works

Medical care ranks 133rd out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, which is the highest-ranked category for this neighborhood, though it's still only in the middle of the pack. Minami-Nagasaki 5-chome has one hospital and one pediatric clinic.

For school, Nagasaki 6-chome has Sakura Elementary School, and Nagasaki 5-chome has Meiho Junior High School. For commuting, Higashi-Nagasaki is served only by Local trains; passing through Shiinamachi, it's just one more stop to Ikebukuro. The Toei Oedo Line isn't right by the station; Ochiai-Minami-Nagasaki Station is about a 10-minute walk away.

03Heads-up

The area around the north exit is a district densely packed with wooden houses, and the planned route of Hojo No. 172 cuts through the blocks on the north side. The section covering Nagasaki 1-chome to 5-chome was originally scheduled for completion in fiscal 2020, but as of the end of fiscal 2025 it's still under construction, now planned for completion by the end of fiscal 2030.

For everyday shopping, this neighborhood ranks only 240th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo. Judging from our street photos, street cleanliness ranks 374th, which is the weakest category for this neighborhood; sidewalks rank 305th.

04A bit of history

In 1915, Higashi-Nagasaki Station opened on the Musashino Railway (now the Seibu Ikebukuro Line). The station name was given the prefix "Higashi" (east) to distinguish it from Nagasaki Station in Nagasaki Prefecture.

During the war, most of this area escaped burning, except for parts of Nagasaki 4-chome and 5-chome.

05What's coming

Hojo No. 26, a roughly 280-meter stretch from Nagasaki 5-chome to Minami-Nagasaki 6-chome, is also scheduled for completion by the end of fiscal 2030. Nagasaki 4-chome also has two disaster-prevention neighborhood redevelopment projects, covering about 1 hectare in total. Toshima City's vision is to preserve the shopping streets that currently let people shop with peace of mind, while also developing pedestrian spaces that connect the north and south sides of the station with the existing shops.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
