From the eateries by the station and the Meguro River up to the hilltop homes of Ikedayama and Shimazuyama
Three train lines converge at Gotanda Station, and the Ikegami Line departs from here, with platforms built even higher than the Yamanote Line. Near the east exit, Higashi-Gotanda 1-chome is an entertainment district. The Meguro River flows past the station, and in spring both banks are lined with cherry blossoms that attract plenty of flower-viewing crowds. Walk up the slope towards the northeast and 3-chome is Shimazuyama while 5-chome is Ikedayama – once you reach the high ground it becomes a quiet residential area.
For public transport it ranks 25th out of 155 neighbourhoods in Tokyo. The Yamanote Line gets you to Shinagawa in about 5 minutes, Shibuya in about 7 minutes, and Shinjuku in about 14 minutes. There's a Tokyu Store in front of the station and a Seijo Ishii in the station building, with the Tokyu Store open until midnight. Clinics and pharmacies rank 27th, so you don't have to travel far to see a doctor. In our street-view photo ratings, buildings rank 13th. Ikedayama Park preserves the Edo-period strolling garden of the Okayama Domain Ikeda family's secondary residence, with ponds and waterfalls arranged along the height differences of the elevated terrain.
If you live right near the station, that entertainment district on the east side stays pretty lively into the evening. There's a shortage of large parks and expanses of green space, and the area is adjacent to major trunk roads. Ikedayama Park closes at 5pm, only extending to 6pm in July and August.
This place name already appears in the land survey records from 1671 (Kanbun 11), and it's generally thought to come from rice paddies in the Meguro River valley, each about five tan in size – roughly 5,000 square meters. Gotanda Station opened in 1911, and in the same year Hoshi Pharmaceutical set up its head office and factory southwest of the station, on the land where the TOC Building now stands; the factory only moved away in 1967. During the Edo period, Higashi-Gotanda 3-chome was home to a residence of the Sendai Domain's Date family, while 5-chome had a residence of the Okayama Domain's Ikeda family – that's where Ikedayama got its name. The Sendai Domain estate in 3-chome passed to the Shimazu family in the early Meiji era, which is how Shimazuyama got its name; the former Prince Shimazu residence, built in the Taisho era, is now the main building of Seisen University.
The Higashi-Gotanda 2-chome District 3 redevelopment along the Meguro River received its city planning decision in October 2020, broke ground in November 2023, and is scheduled to finish in 2027. The plan includes roughly 389 residential units plus offices, shops, and childcare facilities, with waterfront spaces and green paths being created along the Meguro River.
