Local guide

01First impressions

Zhonghe Street is the main street where locals do their shopping and run errands — banks, clinics, and restaurants line up one after another. There are also hypermarkets and parks along the way, so most everyday needs can be met right on this street. This area was developed early, so there are many old neighborhoods, with quite a few homes built along the hillside roads. The most prominent landmark on the hill is Fuxing Senior High School, whose campus sits at the foot of Datun Mountain and looks out over the Guandu Plain and the Taipei Basin, which is why the school has long been nicknamed the 'mountain town'.

02What works

For kids starting elementary school, it depends on which village you live in: Zhiren Village is zoned for Wenhua Elementary School, Kaiming Village is zoned for Yifang Elementary School, and Zhonghe Village is a shared zone for both Yixian and Wenhua Elementary Schools. Yifang Elementary School is just outside the neighborhood, right next to the eastern edge of Kaiming Village. On the Kaiming Village side, at the intersection of Zhuhai Road and Quanyuan Road, there's Kaiming Park, a roughly 5,600-square-meter community park with a pavilion. If you want to soak your feet, head south out of the neighborhood along Zhonghe Street to Fuxing Park, a 2.6-hectare park with a free hot spring foot bath that local elders often visit.

03Heads-up

Xinbeitou MRT Station is just outside the neighborhood, with Zhonghe Street extending from its northwest side. Xinbeitou Station is on a branch line, so you'll need to transfer at Beitou Station to get downtown, and trains run less frequently than on the main line. For public transit, this neighborhood ranks 61st among Taipei's 73 neighborhoods. The hillside roads and old narrow lanes require extra care when passing other cars or parking. Sidewalks here rank last, so watch your step while walking.

04A bit of history

The traditional name for this area is Dingbeitou, and the 'Datun sub-area' that Wikipedia compiles based on Beitou District Office village data also includes these three villages. When Fuxing Senior High School was founded in 1953, it was called Taiwan Provincial Fuxing Senior High School. After Taipei City's administrative reorganization in 1968, the school was renamed Taipei Municipal Fuxing Middle School; the junior high division closed in 1970, and the school took its current name, Fuxing Senior High School. Wego Senior High School, on Zhuhai Road just south of the neighborhood, was originally Zhuhai Vocational High School of Commerce, founded by the Guangdong warlord Chen Jitang; it was reorganized as Wego Senior High School in 1993 and began admitting students the following year.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Taipei neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
