01First impressions

Living around Cathay Hospital means living in an older residential area beside the centre of Xizhi. Real-estate listings draw this area around Sijhih Cathay General Hospital and describe it as fairly self-contained, by the river and away from the main roads. Most of the housing is in established blocks more than 30 years old.

The hospital is on Lane 59, Jiancheng Road. Jiancheng Road is the main street of Qiaodong Village, with snack shops, restaurants, grocers and convenience stores along it.

For a walk, head to the Keelung River, where there is a riverside footpath and a cycle path.

02What works

Greenery ranks 17th, in the upper tier of New Taipei's 100 neighborhoods, which fits the footpath and open space along the river.

For school, Chongde, Chengzhong and Qiaodong villages in this neighborhood, plus some neighborhood units (lin) of Jiancheng and Xinchang, are in the Chongde Elementary School catchment; Xiushan and Fu'an villages belong to Xiufeng Elementary School. Xiufeng Elementary School is on Ren'ai Road in Xiushan Village, while Chongde Elementary School is next door in Jiadong Village, outside this neighborhood.

Public transport ranks 36th, in the middle of New Taipei's 100 neighborhoods. The nearest station, Xizhi Station on Taiwan Railway, is not in this neighborhood but in the adjoining Xizhi Xike neighborhood; listings also name the Xizhi train station area as one of this area's neighbours.

03Heads-up

In our street photos, pavements rank 88th, this neighborhood's weakest category. Listings mention that there are few roads in and out, so traffic jams at commuting times, and that some people mind the hospital's ambulances and crowds.

The Xidong Line and the Keelung MRT are both planned to stop at the Xizhi District Office, and listings note that neither has a station in this area.

04A bit of history

Xizhi was hit by typhoon floods many times from the 1980s onwards, and the damage from Typhoon Nari in 2001 was severe. The Yuanshanzi Flood Diversion Channel was completed in 2005, sending floodwater from the upper Keelung River out to sea in heavy rain; since Nari, Xizhi has had almost no major flooding anywhere.

In December of the same year, Sijhih Cathay General Hospital opened. Listings take this hospital as the centre and call the area the Cathay Hospital living area.

How are these measured?

Compared against the New Taipei neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
