Moving into a big estate on the Tutan hillside, where Taipei Xiaocheng's detached and semi-detached houses climb all the way up the slope
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Living in this part of Ankeng means living in one of the large estates on the Tutan Mountain hillside. Real-estate listings say the people here used to be mainly the long-time residents of hillside estates such as Rose China Town and Taipei Xiaocheng.
Rose China Town spans Meigui and Jixiang villages and is a semi-open residential estate. Taipei Xiaocheng is semi-gated, with detached and semi-detached houses climbing from an entrance at about 40 metres above sea level to about 200 metres.
To get out, you take the Ankeng Light Rail: stop K02 is Rose China Town and K03 is Taipei Xiaocheng, only 0.669 kilometres apart.
Greenery ranks 11th of New Taipei's 100 neighborhoods, which fits the estates on the Tutan Mountain hillside. On the southern edge, the entrance to Erbazi Botanical Garden is on Daguan Road; the garden covers about 130 hectares, and part of it lies outside this neighborhood.
Daguan Junior High and Elementary School is at 1 Qiaoxin Road in De'an Village; the catchment of its primary section is Xiaocheng Village, and Meigui and Jixiang villages are free-choice zones. The school was built here because the junior high schools in the original catchment could not take all the local primary school leavers.
For medical care there is Cardinal Tien Hospital Ankang Branch in De'an Village, with 335 beds, and light rail stop K04 is named after it. The hospital began planning it in 1994, but it only opened in 2014.
Even with this hospital, healthcare ranks 91st of New Taipei's 100 neighborhoods. Daily shopping ranks second from the bottom; listings say the supermarkets are concentrated around Ankang Road Section 2, and the traditional market is Liqing Evening Market inside this neighborhood.
In our street photos, pavements rank 97th. Listings also say many of the large estates are on the hillside and Ankang Road has long been a bottleneck at peak times.
The light rail does not run into central Taipei, so you change to the Circular Line at K09 Shisizhang.
Ankeng was once written with characters meaning "dark valley", for a valley thick with trees, and in 1801 Lin Dengxuan found the name unrefined and replaced it with similar-sounding characters meaning "peaceful valley". Settlers pushed in under the armed jieshou system, leaving place names such as Dingcheng and Xiacheng along Ankang Road.
Two large estates were later built on this hillside: work on Rose China Town began in 1979 on a bare slope, and Taipei Xiaocheng was planned around 1981 and built in stages between 1985 and 1991. Xiaocheng Village was split off from Mingcheng Village in 1998 and named after the estate.
Main construction on the light rail began in April 2016, and the line opened on 10 February 2023.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
