Evening rides to the mouth of the Tamsui River, watching the sun sink into the sea
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Living in Shalun, evenings mean cycling to the river mouth to watch the sunset. Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf, on the east bank where the Tamsui River meets the sea, is famous for its sunsets and is still a working fishing port today. Residents' comments on real-estate listings also say that, right by the sea, there are plenty of cycle paths that are pleasant to ride.
Daily life runs along Shalun Road, which stretches seawards to Fisherman's Wharf. Shalun Station on the Blue Ocean Line light rail is inside the neighborhood, and the next stop is Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf Station.
Children go to Tiansheng Elementary School in Youche Village, whose base catchment is Shalun Village (except neighborhood unit 8), Youche Village and Dazhuang Village; about half of Dazhuang Village belongs to Danhai New Town.
In our street photos, litter and street cleanliness ranks 9th of New Taipei's 100 neighborhoods, and greenery 6th, both near the top.
Buildings rank 11th, also near the top. Public transport ranks 60th, in the middle range; real-estate listings say the light rail runs less often than the MRT.
What to think through before settling here long term is shopping and seeing a doctor, since both mean going outside the neighborhood. Everyday shopping ranks 96th of New Taipei's 100 neighborhoods and healthcare third from the bottom, both toward the bottom.
Listings say clinics and pharmacies are concentrated in the old shopping area on Section 2 of Zhongzheng Road, and for a big shop you drive to the Carrefour in the new town. Sidewalks rank 78th, also toward the bottom.
Listings also say the northeast monsoon blows hard in winter, traffic in and out of Tamsui can jam at peak hours, and at weekends the road to Fisherman's Wharf is busy with tourists.
Zhongyi Temple at Youchekou has stood here since 1853. In the Sino-French War of 1884, French forces levelled the gun batteries around Shalun and landed at Shalun on 8 October.
The same beach later became a seaside bathing beach, opened in 1919. When Tamsui Gai (town) was set up the following year, its dazi already included Youchekou and Shalunzi.
The bathing beach closed in 1999. In November 2020 the first phase of the Blue Ocean Line opened, with Shalun Station placed here.
Shalun Cultural and Creative Park, on the site of the old bathing beach, broke ground in September 2023, and New Taipei City said at the time that it was due to be finished in 2026. A September 2026 report said the first phase is a training centre for Nan Shan Life Insurance, and the second phase, accommodation, is expected to open in the third quarter of 2027.
About 3,000 ping (roughly one hectare) of open waterside green space is planned around the park. Danjiang Bridge opened on 12 May 2026, and its approach road on the Tamsui side includes Shalun Road; the middle of the bridge is reserved for light rail and serves as a bus lane for now.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
