One of Musashino's three great spring-fed ponds, its banks a nature park rich in wild birds and flowers
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Right in the center of this neighborhood is Zenpukuji Pond, one of the three major spring-fed ponds in Musashino, surrounded by the roughly 8-hectare Tokyo Metropolitan Zenpukuji Park. The park is full of wild birds and flowers, making it a rare natural park in Tokyo.
The pond is also the source of the Zenpukuji River; outside the park, the town is mostly residential. In the southwest corner, 2-chome is home to Tokyo Woman's Christian University, where 7 campus buildings built in the 1920s and 30s are registered as national tangible cultural properties and are still in use today.
To the east along Ome Kaido is Igusa Hachimangu Shrine, which holds yabusame (a Shinto ritual of mounted archery) once every 5 years. There's no train station within the neighborhood, which covers Zenpukuji 1-chome to 4-chome and, to the east, Momoi 3-chome and 4-chome. In 2020 about 18,000 people lived here, roughly 128 people per hectare.
Based on our street photos, greenery ranks 68th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, near the top — the highest-ranking item for this neighborhood. Street cleanliness ranks 160th, in the middle of the pack.
Getting around here usually means buses. From Ogikubo Station it's about a 13-minute ride to the "Igusa Hachimangu" stop. From Nishi-Ogikubo, Kichijoji, or Kami-Shakujii, take a bus to the "Zenpukuji" stop, and it's a 5-minute walk to the park.
Public transit ranks 372nd out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the weakest item for this neighborhood. Daily shopping ranks 368th, also near the bottom.
Real estate listings mostly cite Nishi-Ogikubo Station, while 3-chome and 4-chome are mostly listed under Kami-Shakujii Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line; either way it's a 12- to 20-minute walk.
Zenpukuji was also on Suginami City's list of disaster-affected areas after the torrential rain of September 4, 2005. Based on our own calculations using points taken every 40 meters across the neighborhood on the Geospatial Information Authority's flood maps, about 20% of the points fall within the anticipated flood zone, mostly under 0.5 meters.
The name Zenpukuji is generally thought to come from a temple of the same name that once stood by the pond; that temple had already fallen into ruin by the Edo period. The spring beside the pond is called Osonoi; according to legend, Minamoto no Yoritomo, on his way to campaign in Oshu, ran into a drought and dug into the ground with the tip of his bow to find water, which is how the spring got its name.
The spring later dried up, and the Osonoi Falls seen today was recreated by drilling a separate well and pumping up water.
Starting in 2025, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is building an underground regulating reservoir for the upper Zenpukuji River, with a tunnel about 40 meters underground. The project area includes Zenpukuji 1-chome and Momoi 4-chome, and construction is scheduled to run through fiscal year 2041.
