01First impressions

Wakaba 2-chome has many temples in its area, and this part of Wakaba also has Gakushuin Primary School. Heading south to Minamimoto-machi, the elevation changes sharply—Sennichizaka and Shinsukezaka, two steep slopes, are both within the town, with residences mostly at the top and bottom of the slopes.

This neighborhood uses old place names carried over from the former Yotsuya Ward. Yotsuya Ward was established in 1878, and after Shinjuku City was founded in 1947 the administrative ward name disappeared, but the current Yotsuya area of Shinjuku City covers roughly the same area as the former Yotsuya Ward. Shinjuku City Office's Yotsuya Special Branch Office manages town names that include Yotsuya, Wakaba, Minamimoto-machi, and Shinanomachi in this neighborhood.

02What works

Public transit ranks 81st out of 395 Tokyo neighborhoods, in the front section. Looking at our street photos, street cleanliness ranks 76th, also in the front section.

No station sits right in the middle of the neighborhood; one station is near each end. At the east end, Yotsuya Station has four lines: the JR Chuo Line Rapid, the Chuo-Sobu Line Local, plus the Marunouchi Line and the Namboku Line; most of the JR station building is on the Chiyoda City side. At the other end, Shinanomachi Station is served only by the Chuo-Sobu Line Local.

On real estate listing pages, properties in Wakaba 1-chome and 2-chome are mostly listed under Yotsuya Station, about 9 minutes on foot. Wakaba 3-chome is listed under Shinanomachi Station, 7 to 10 minutes; of the 12 buildings in Minamimoto-machi, 10 are listed under Shinanomachi Station, with the closest 2 minutes from the station.

03Heads-up

In 2020, this neighborhood had about 107 people per hectare. Buildings rank 347th out of 395 Tokyo neighborhoods, in the back section.

The elevated tracks of the JR Chuo Line and the Shuto Expressway Route 4 Shinjuku Line cross through the southeastern part of Wakaba and the middle of Minamimoto-machi. The west side of Shinanomachi is occupied by Keio University Hospital and its campus, with residences mostly on the north side.

04A bit of history

On October 9, 1894, the Kobu Railway's Shinjuku-to-Ushigome section opened, and Yotsuya Station and Shinanomachi Station opened on the same day.

In April 1943, when the Tokyo metropolis system was implemented, Wakaba became a new town name, while Minamimoto-machi was formed by combining one character each from Minami-machi and Moto-machi in Yotsuya Ward. The name Shinanomachi comes from the residence of Nagai Naomasa, Lord of Shinano, a retainer of the Edo shogunate; that year, East and West Shinanomachi were also merged into a single town.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
