North of Wakabadai Station in Inagi, the last district of Tama New Town to be built: large apartment complexes, the shopping centers and clinics by the station, and Wakabadai Park

Local guide

01First impressions

Wakabadai Station's building is actually located in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Once you're through the ticket gates, the road on the left on the north side marks the boundary between Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture. This neighbourhood only covers the Tokyo side north of the station, that is, Wakabadai 1 to 4 chome in Inagi City. This area was the last district to be developed in Tama New Town, and shopping centres, clinics, and large apartment complexes are all concentrated north of the station.

02What works

North of the station there are several shopping centres such as Frespo Wakabadai and Across Plaza Wakabadai, with supermarkets, drugstores, and electronics retailers, plus Clinic Mall Wakabadai, where clinics are clustered together. Pedestrian-only paths link the schools, Wakabadai Park, and Miharashi Ryokuchi (a lookout green space), so you don't have to compete with cars for space. On clear days, you can see Shinjuku's skyscrapers and the landmark tower of Yokohama's Minato Mirai from Miharashi Ryokuchi. Judging from our street photos, greenery here ranks 2nd out of Tokyo's 180 neighbourhoods, the best of the seven categories for this neighbourhood. The streets are also very clean, ranking 3rd for cleanliness.

03Heads-up

Neither the Special Express nor the Express on the Keio Sagamihara Line stops at Wakabadai—you can only take the Semi Express, Rapid, or Local trains, and public transport here ranks 175th out of Tokyo's 180 neighbourhoods. Shops and clinics are almost all concentrated in the area right in front of the station; for homes farther from the station, there are far fewer supermarkets, convenience stores, and clinics within walking distance. We calculate how many clinics and pharmacies each home can reach on foot, so medical and pharmacy access here ranks last among the 180 neighbourhoods. The city hall, city hospital, and central library are all on the other side of Inagi City, so daily life here actually feels closer to the neighbouring Asao Ward in Kawasaki City.

04A bit of history

In 1889, six villages including Sakahama merged to form Inagi Village, and this area originally belonged to Sakahama. Under the 1956 National Capital Region Development Act, the plan was to preserve Inagi as a green belt protecting farmland, and the village council unanimously opposed it. In 1965, the law was amended to withdraw the green belt designation, and only then was Inagi incorporated into Tama New Town. Wakabadai Station opened in 1974; it was named "Wakabadai" because the plateau was covered in fresh new leaves (wakaba), and the name had nothing to do with the area's name at the time. In March 1999, the district north of the station opened, and Inagi City changed the place name here from Sakahama to Wakabadai, matching the station name. In 2009, the municipal cultural facility iPlaza opened, housing a 410-seat hall and a library.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighbourhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
