01First impressions

Takaido Station's platform is built above Kanpachi Dori, and looking southeast, the Kanda River running alongside the tracks is a famous spot for cherry blossoms—you can see them from the platform in spring. Around the station exit are quiet residential streets; on the southwest side along the Kanda River, Tokyo metropolitan housing complexes stretch in a row.

Walk 5 minutes southwest and you'll find Yokufukai, founded in 1925 for elderly people who could no longer support themselves after the Great Kanto Earthquake. Now there's a hospital and elderly care facilities there; the main building, completed in 1926, is a Tokyo-designated historic building.

This neighborhood covers Takaido-higashi 2 to 4-chome, Takaido-nishi 1 to 3-chome, and Kami-Takaido 2-chome; around 32,000 people lived here in 2020, about 159 people per hectare.

02What works

From our street photos, greenery ranks 98th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, near the top—this neighborhood's best score. The Kanda River along the tracks and the old campus of Yokufukai are both within the neighborhood.

Street cleanliness ranks 173rd, in the middle range. Daily shopping ranks 199th, also in the middle range, with the Ozeki supermarket right by the station.

Right below the station on Kanpachi Dori, there's a stop for local bus routes.

03Heads-up

The Inokashira Line's Express trains don't stop at Takaido Station—only Local trains stop here. Public transit ranks 176th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, in the middle range.

TidyMap calculated this using the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan's flood inundation hazard map, taking a point roughly every 40 meters within the neighborhood: about 20% fall within the projected flood zone, mostly under 0.5 meters. The City's hazard map assumes rainfall of 153 mm per hour.

Suginami City's flood hazard map separately designates part of Takaido-higashi 2-chome, blocks 22 and 23, as a sediment disaster warning area and special warning area.

04A bit of history

On the site of the Suginami Cleaning Plant northeast of the station, traces of human life from about 25,000 years ago were excavated, known as the Takaido-higashi site. In 1966, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government chose this site as the planned location for a cleaning plant, and residents felt the site selection process lacked transparency and rose up in opposition.

In 1971, the governor declared the "Garbage War," and Koto City blocked Suginami's garbage trucks on the road twice, with a full reconciliation not reached until 1974. The dedicated garbage truck lane beneath Kanpachi Dori was one of the conditions residents proposed at the time.

The plant began operating in 1982, and was rebuilt in 2017. The new plant houses a history museum about the Garbage War, as well as a foot bath that uses heat from incineration.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
