01First impressions

There's a statue of Sakamoto Ryoma in front of the station, sent by his home prefecture of Kochi after the remains of the Hamagawa Battery were excavated nearby in 2004. In 2015, Shin-Hamagawa Park beside the Katsushima Canal restored a full-size replica of the battery's cannon.

The Tachiaigawa river flows east-west right in front of the station, with Higashi-Oi on the north bank and Minami-Oi on the opposite side. Aside from along the main roads, Minami-Oi is mostly residential land.

The melody played when trains arrive at Tachiaigawa Station is an arrangement of "Kusa Keiba," because Oi Racecourse, which lies outside the neighborhood, is nearby.

02What works

Public transit ranks 124th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the strongest of this neighborhood's rankings. Both Tachiaigawa and Omorikaigan stations are within the neighborhood, and Omorikaigan Station is about 700 meters from JR Omori Station at its shortest.

03Heads-up

On September 11, 2025, heavy rain caused the Tachiaigawa river to overflow, and Shinagawa City issued Emergency Safety Measures. By the end of October, there were 527 cases of flooding above floor level across the City. The City office plans to install additional flood barriers near the Tachiaigawa railway bridge and Tachiaigawa Bridge.

Judging from our street photos, greenery ranks 294th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the weakest of this neighborhood's rankings. Healthcare ranks 259th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, in the lower-middle range. On the canal side of Higashi-Oi 2-chome, there is also industrial land such as warehouses.

04A bit of history

Suzugamori Execution Ground opened in 1651 and remained in operation until it closed in 1871. To reach the execution ground, one had to first cross Namida Bridge over the Tachiaigawa river, where condemned prisoners and their families would say their final farewells; this bridge is now called Hamagawa Bridge. In the Edo period, the Tosa Domain's lower residence stood in the area around Higashi-Oi 3-chome, outside the neighborhood, and it is said that Sakamoto Ryoma was once dispatched there to guard the coast when the Black Ships arrived.

After a 1961 city planning report, the Tachiaigawa river was converted into a sewer trunk line, and the upstream section above Tsukimi Bridge was covered over. Starting in 2002, JR East began channeling groundwater seepage from the Sobu Line tunnel into the Tachiaigawa river, noticeably improving water quality.

05What's coming

The Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Sewerage is building a stormwater discharge pipe beneath the Tachiaigawa river; the planned date for water flow to begin has been pushed back from 2027 to around October 2031. Before then, the temporary storage capacity of the Second Tachiaigawa Trunk Line is scheduled to be doubled ahead of the 2027 rainy season. Once the discharge pipe is completed, there are also plans to install a floodgate and a pumping station at the river mouth.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
