01First impressions

In the Taito and Kojima towns, shops and homes are mixed together in the same blocks. Right in the middle of the area is the Satake Shopping Street, running from Kasuga-dori to Kiyosubashi-dori, a 330-meter arcade covered the whole way, about a 5-minute walk from Shin-Okachimachi Station.

It formed a shopkeepers' association in 1898, making it the second shopping street in Japan to organize itself this way, and it still holds all kinds of events today, loved by the people nearby. In 2020 about 263 people lived here per hectare, denser than Taito City's overall average of about 209.

The people living here skew more toward ages 25 to 39, and more of them live alone. In 2020 about 62% of households were single-person households, and about 29% were ages 25 to 39, both higher than Taito City overall. Two-thirds of households live in apartment buildings of 6 floors or more, with renters and owners each making up a little over 40%.

02What works

Daily shopping and medical care both rank 4th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the two highest-ranked categories for this neighborhood. The platforms for the Toei Oedo Line and the Tsukuba Express both sit right beneath Kasuga-dori, and this station is a transfer point between the two lines.

Taito City has long been a hub for the fashion goods industry—shoes, bags, accessories, and the like. In 2004, the City office converted the old Kojima Elementary School building in Kojima 2-chome into a startup support facility, with 19 studio spaces rented out to new entrepreneurs in this field. Kojima town also has the City-run Kojima Park.

03Heads-up

This neighborhood is dense: about 263 people per hectare, compared to about 155 for Tokyo's 23 wards overall. Judging from our street photos, greenery ranks second from the bottom out of 395 neighborhoods, the weakest category for this neighborhood. Cleanliness also ranks toward the bottom, at 374th.

04A bit of history

The shopping street's name comes from the Satake family of Akita Domain, who had several residences in the Taito area during the Edo period. In the early Meiji era, acrobatics tents, yose theaters, and food stalls gathered on the former residence sites, turning the area into a lively entertainment district.

By the latter half of the Meiji era into the Taisho era, yose theaters lined the area, making it one of Tokyo's major entertainment districts. In 1964, when the residential address system was implemented, Okachimachi 1-chome and 2-chome, along with Nicho-machi and Takecho, were reorganized into Taito 1-chome through 4-chome, and the administrative place name 'Okachimachi' disappeared.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
