A shrine from the legend of Minamoto no Yoritomo tying up his horse, and Setagaya Kannon, both tucked away in residential lanes

Shimouma doesn't have its own station, so its shrines and temples sit tucked in among the houses. At Komatsunagi Shrine in 4-chome, legend has it that Minamoto no Yoritomo stopped to pray there before setting out on campaign to Oshu, tying his beloved horse to the shrine's pine tree — which is how the shrine got its name.
Also in 4-chome, Setagaya Kannon (formally named Kannonji) is a temple founded in 1951. Inside, the Rokkakudo hall enshrines statues of Fudo Myoo and the Hachidai Doji made by Koen, designated an Important Cultural Property by the national government, and the hall is opened to the public on the 28th of every month.
In 2020, about 203 people lived per hectare in this neighborhood. Kids go to school within the neighborhood too, with the City-run Komatsunagi Elementary School, Komadome Junior High School, and Tokyo Gakugei University Senior High School.

The town has no station of its own, so which station you walk to depends on which chome you live in. On real estate listing pages, 1-chome and 5-chome are mostly listed under Yutenji Station, 2-chome and 3-chome under Sangenjaya Station, and 6-chome under Gakugei-Daigaku Station, a 7- to 17-minute walk.
There's a bus too: the Tokyu Bus Kuro09 line. It departs from in front of Meguro Station, passes Nakameguro Station and Shimouma 1-chome, loops to Ryuunji Temple in Nozawa, and then heads back to in front of Meguro Station.
Public transit ranks 322nd out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the lowest-ranking category for this neighborhood; everyday convenience ranks 281st, also in the lower tier.
Listings' nearest stations are spread across three stations, with no single one accounting for more than half. Among the 40 buildings on the page, the 18 listed under Sangenjaya are the most, with an 8- to 17-minute walk.
The name Shimouma has two possible origins: one is that it's a shortened form of the old place name Shimo-Umahikisawa; the other is that Minamoto no Yoritomo encountered a landslide here and ordered that from then on, anyone passing through had to lead their horse on foot.
The shrine's name is also connected to horses: the legend of Yoritomo tying his beloved horse to a pine tree became the two characters for horse (koma) and tie (tsunagi) — Komatsunagi. The Jakuzure River once flowed in front of the shrine's entrance; what remains today is a bridge.
