01First impressions

Right outside the ticket gates at Nakano-fujimicho Station, the Kanda River is right in front of you. The station is on the Yayoicho side (also within the neighborhood), and heading south past Honan-dori is Minamidai. Next to the station is the roughly 5.9-hectare Nakano Rail Yard, which maintains and inspects trains for the Marunouchi Line and the Ginza Line.

Minamidai Elementary School moved into a new school building in April 2025, and at the same time the Minamidai Children's Plaza opened on the north side. After school and on days off, elementary school students can play here on the schoolyard and in the gymnasium. There's no station within Minamidai itself, but buses run direct from Minamidai Intersection to Shinjuku Station West Exit and to Shibuya, with no transfer needed.

Minamidai 3-chome has a City library and a City citizens' activity center.

02What works

From our street photos, sidewalks rank 110th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the strongest ranking among the neighborhood environment items. Past the Kanda River, Hongo Fureai Park along Nakano-dori has shade trees and benches, plus a walking path that loops around. Because the rail yard is right next door, mornings and evenings bring main-line through trains that start or end their run at this station.

03Heads-up

The area around Minamidai 1-chome and 2-chome is dense with wooden detached houses and old apartment buildings, with little open space or greenery, and many roads less than 4 meters wide. The City office has established a disaster-prevention district improvement area plan for this reason, requiring notification for any construction or change of use within the area.

The University of Tokyo Faculty of Education Attached Secondary School, at the center of the district, serves as a wide-area evacuation site in the event of a disaster. In February 2016, the City office opened Minamidai Ginkgo Park, equipped with disaster-prevention facilities, in a corner of the school grounds.

There's no station within Minamidai itself; all five usable stations are outside the town. Public transit ranks 127th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo; from our street photos, street cleanliness ranks 288th, the weakest item in this neighborhood.

04A bit of history

The land next to the station was set aside in 1944 by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority, the predecessor of Tokyo Metro, to extend Subway Line 4 (now the Marunouchi Line). The station opened on February 8, 1961, and the inspection yard was established on the same day.

The town name Minamidai was established in 1967 when the residential address system was implemented, incorporating parts of former town names such as Tadacho, Niiyama-dori, and Maeharacho. Tada Elementary School and Niiyama Elementary School merged in 2017 to form Minamidai Elementary School, which moved in 2025 into a new school building built on the former site of Tada Elementary School.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
