Kita-Akabane Station's platform sits right above the Shingashi River, with the ticket gates split by the river into the Akabane exit and the Ukima exit. The station is surrounded by several residential towers of ten stories or more.
This neighborhood covers Ukima 1 and 3-chome on the north bank of the Shingashi River, Akabane-kita 1 to 3-chome on the south bank, plus Akabanedai 4-chome and Kirigaoka 2-chome up on the plateau. In 2020 about 30,000 people lived here, roughly 187 per hectare.
Heading south from here on the Saikyo Line, Shinjuku is the 5th stop, with no transfer needed.
Akabanedai 4-chome has the 351-bed Tokyo Kita Medical Center. For medical and pharmacy access, this neighborhood ranks 294th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, landing in the lower range, but the big hospital is right in the neighborhood.
For grocery shopping there's a Life supermarket on each side of the station, one at the Ukima exit and one at the Akabane exit.

Based on our street photos, buildings rank 378th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, landing in the lower range, the weakest category in this neighborhood. Akabane-kita 3-chome and Kirigaoka 2-chome up on the plateau have no usable street photo grid cells, so the score mainly comes from Ukima and Akabane-kita 1 and 2-chome.

Using points taken every 40 meters within the neighborhood against the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan's flood map, about seventy percent of the points fall within the expected flooding zone, mostly 3 meters or deeper. The riverside areas of Ukima 1 and 3-chome and Akabane-kita 1 and 2-chome are almost entirely within the flood zone, while Akabane-kita 3-chome and the two plateau chome are mostly outside it.
Kita City's evacuation policy asks low-lying residents not to stay at home, but to head to higher ground as far away as possible; in areas where flooding lasts a long time, taking refuge on the upper floors of a building is also dangerous. Kita City also has a separate flood risk hazard map.
The name Ukima is said to come from the way it juts out into the Arakawa River, looking like a floating island. This area was formerly called Ukimahara, once known for wild primroses, though the original habitat no longer exists.
Ukima originally belonged to Yokosone Village in Saitama Prefecture; after the Arakawa River's course was changed, it was left on the right bank, connected to the land on the Tokyo side, and was only incorporated into Iwabuchi-machi in Tokyo Prefecture in 1926. In 1985 the Saikyo Line opened, and Kita-Akabane Station was built right over the Shingashi River.

Hospitals with inpatient beds (2020 data), public elementary and junior high schools whose catchment covers this area, high schools and universities within 1 km, stations, parks of 1 ha or more, and large shopping malls and department stores. Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
