Local guide

01First impressions

Keio-tamagawa Station is elevated, and normally only its north ticket gate is open. Southwest of the station is the Keiokaku Velodrome, a track for bicycle racing. East of the station is Kadokawa Daiei Studio, where films have been shot on the same site since 1933. A short walk south takes you up onto the Tama River embankment, and to the east runs Sakura-zutsumi-dori, lined on both sides with cherry trees.

02What works

Cleanliness ranks 32nd of Tokyo's 167 neighbourhoods, and in our street photos the streets are mostly clean. Neighbouring Chofu Station is only 1.2 km away and has plenty of shops, so bigger shopping trips can be done there.

03Heads-up

Everyday shopping ranks last of the 167 neighbourhoods; there are no large shops around the station, so buying things often means a trip to Chofu. Seeing a doctor or picking up prescriptions is not easy either, with medical and pharmacy access also ranked 167th. Keio Line Special Express and Express trains normally pass through; only Semi Express, Rapid and Local trains stop here. On race days at Keiokaku, noticeably more people crowd the station area. For big events or the Chofu City fireworks festival, a temporary ticket gate on the south side is opened as well.

04A bit of history

When it opened in 1916 the station was called Tamagawara, and it was used mainly to carry sand and gravel dug from the Tama River bed. In 1927 the Keio Electric Tramway opened an amusement park, Keiokaku, and crowds of visitors poured through the station. In 1933 a film studio was built east of the station; it later passed to Nikkatsu and then Daiei, and Kadokawa has run it since 2002. In 1949, after the war, part of the Keiokaku land was sold and turned into a velodrome. In 1971 the Sagamihara Line was extended across the Tama River, and only then did this stop the station being a terminus. Keio Floral Garden ANGE next to the station (formerly Keio Hyakkaen) closed in 2021.

05What's coming

Keio Corporation is carrying out a land readjustment project on about 2.8 hectares, including the former garden site, with the project period set to run to fiscal 2028. Work on a ten-storey rental apartment building began in May 2025, with opening planned for around July 2027; the ground floor will have a Keio supermarket, a nursery and shops. The second and third floors of the same building will house a Chofu City welfare centre and medical facilities moving from the Chofu Station area. Work on a second building, with 264 apartments for sale, began in August 2025, and residents are due to start moving in from late January 2028.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighbourhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
