Right as you come up from Exit 1 of Higashi-koenji Station, you'll find Sanshi no Mori Park. This land was a national sericulture experiment station starting in 1911; the station moved to Tsukuba in 1980, and the site wasn't turned into the park and Suginami Elementary School No. 10 until 1986.
The park's sports plaza doubles as the elementary school's playground, open to anyone when classes aren't in session, and the school's indoor underground pool is also open to the public. The station sits right next to the park, and a direct train on the Marunouchi Line reaches Shinjuku in 4 stops, with no transfer needed.
This neighborhood covers Wada 2 and 3-chome south of Ome Kaido, plus Koenji-minami 1 and 5-chome to the north, east of Kan-nana. The Wada area has long had many danchi housing complexes and company dormitories, and it's still mainly residential today. In 2020, about 25,000 people lived here, roughly 223 people per hectare.
Public transit ranks 112th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, putting it in the middle of the pack. Above the station on Ome Kaido, there are also Toei buses (Shuku 91) to Shinjuku Station's west exit, and Kanto buses (Naka 35, Naka 36) to Nakano Station.

Wada 2-chome is home to the 340-bed Suginami Hospital, affiliated with Kyorin University School of Medicine, which has been run by Kyorin Gakuen since April 2024. Medical and pharmacy access ranks 189th, in the middle.
From our street photos, sidewalks rank 376th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, near the bottom, the weakest category in this neighborhood.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government's 2024 flood inundation assumption for the Kanda River basin is based on a maximum hourly rainfall of 153 mm. Using points sampled every 40 meters within the neighborhood on the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan's flood map, about 40% of the points fall within the projected flood zone; in Koenji-minami 1-chome it's about half, mostly 0.5 to 3 meters deep.
To check the flood depth at your own home, the City office asks residents to use the flood risk map in the Tokyo Bousai App.
Higashi-koenji Station wasn't originally part of the Marunouchi Line plan. When the Toden Suginami Line was discontinued in 1963, residents along the route demanded a station, and it was rushed to open before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
When the sericulture experiment station moved out in 1980, the land above the station was redeveloped accordingly. The park opened in May 1986; in June, the station building on the south side of Ome Kaido was completed and the entrances/exits were relocated accordingly, and the middle section of Platform 1 was widened at the same time.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
