A riverside mall and an 1850 Chinese wharf, a shuttle-boat ride across the river

Local guide

01First impressions

ICONSIAM is on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, with over 10,000 square meters of riverside park and walkways along the river. The complex includes Siam Takashimaya department store and a performance hall, and the 318-meter Magnolia residential tower is the tallest building in Thailand. Coming from the east bank, you can catch ICONSIAM's shuttle boat across the river from Sathorn Pier. Heading north along the river, Lhong 1919 was originally a Chinese courtyard-style pier and warehouse built in 1850. Now it houses cafés and craft shops, and the most eye-catching feature is a Mazu shrine.

02What works

If you don't want to take the boat, the Gold Line is another option. This fully automated, 1.8-kilometer line with just 3 stations connects to the BTS Silom Line at Krung Thon Buri station. The skywalk at Charoen Nakhon station leads directly to ICONSIAM, and the Gold Line runs until midnight every day, so there are also trains to get back to your hotel at night. For transit, this neighborhood ranks 6th out of Bangkok's 16 neighborhoods, and getting into the city isn't too much of a hassle with these two lines. At the northern end of the neighborhood is Taksin Hospital, a public hospital run by the city government, and the Gold Line's Khlong San station is right at the hospital's entrance.

03Heads-up

The Gold Line only has 3 stations, so to get to the old town or Siam on the other side of the river, you'll need to transfer to the Silom Line at Krung Thon Buri station, or head back to the riverside to catch a boat.

04A bit of history

Khlong San is one of the oldest districts in Bangkok, once covered in orchards, with longkong being the most famous fruit. In 1904, what would become Taksin Hospital was established under the name "Cholera Hospital". This area used to be the terminus of the Maeklong Railway, until the line was shortened to Wongwian Yai in 1961. It only became part of Bangkok in 1971, when Thonburi and Phra Nakhon provinces merged. Taksin Bridge opened in 1982, and the BTS crossed the river to Krung Thon Buri station in 2009. ICONSIAM opened in 2018, and two years later, the Gold Line, funded by the developer, also opened.

05What's coming

There are plans to extend the Gold Line another 0.95 kilometers to Prajadhipok station outside the neighborhood, connecting to the MRT Purple Line's southern extension. The Purple Line's southern extension was originally scheduled to open in 2027, but a report from August 2025 says the full line won't be completed until 2030.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Bangkok neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
