Ari

Old houses on leafy lanes, and one café after another

Local guide

01First impressions

Ari is a quiet old residential area in northern Bangkok that has become a favourite spot for young people and the creative crowd in recent years. Along the tree-shaded sois, between single-storey wooden houses and old Western-style homes with gardens, cafés and bakeries open one after another. Some of the small restaurants double as galleries. After dark, the mouth of Soi Ari turns into a street food strip, with everything from Hainanese chicken rice to duck noodles and pork satay. Still, the overall pace is that of a residential neighbourhood. BTS Ari station sits right at the mouth of Soi Ari—just head downstairs and you're there.

02What works

Based on our street photos, the streets here are the cleanest of the three neighbourhoods, ranking 1st for cleanliness. There are plenty of old houses with tidy exteriors, and this neighbourhood ties with Thong Lo for 1st place in building quality. Both Ari and Sanam Pao stations fall within this neighbourhood, so living between the two stations makes it easy to travel either north or south.

03Heads-up

Pavements are Ari's weakest point, ranking last among the three neighbourhoods—though pavements across all three Bangkok neighbourhoods tend to be below average anyway. Healthcare also ranks last here, though it's actually fairly similar to the other two neighbourhoods. If you head further down Soi Ari to the far end, you'll find an office district with agencies like the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Auditor General—quite a different vibe from the cafés at the mouth of the soi.

04A bit of history

Phahon Yothin Road was completed in 1934, originally built as a 22-kilometre road connecting Bangkok to Don Mueang Airport. After it was extended in 1938, it was renamed after the country's second prime minister. According to long-time residents, in the 1950s and 60s this area was home to nobility, old families, and senior civil servants, with the sois containing only street food stalls and traditional coffee shops. Baan Yoswadi, built in the late 1970s, is considered one of Thailand's earliest apartment buildings. The plot where Kasikorn Bank's headquarters now stands used to be a vegetable garden. The BTS opened in December 1999, with Ari and Sanam Pao stations both launching on the same day.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Bangkok neighbourhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
